In the ceramics industry, the whiteness of sodium feldspar is one of the core indicators determining the aesthetic quality of ceramic products, especially high-grade white porcelain and premium glazes.

Specifically, the impact of sodium feldspar’s whiteness on the ceramics industry is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. Directly Determines the Whiteness of Ceramic Bodies and Glazes

Sodium feldspar typically accounts for about 25% of ceramic body materials and up to 50% in glazes. Therefore, the inherent whiteness (fired whiteness) of the raw sodium feldspar is directly “transferred” to the final ceramic product.

Body Whiteness: As market competition intensifies, ceramic manufacturers are raising their whiteness requirements for tile bodies to enhance product grades (e.g., increasing fired whiteness from 20 to 30-40 or even higher). This requires the sodium feldspar used as a primary raw material to possess high fired whiteness (typically above 25 degrees).

Glaze Whiteness: When formulating high-whiteness glazes for ceramic tiles, sodium feldspar is a crucial base material. Using high-whiteness sodium feldspar, combined with an optimized potassium-to-sodium ratio, ensures the glaze maintains a lasting and pure whiteness after firing.

2. Affects Color and Translucency

At high temperatures, sodium feldspar melts into a glassy phase, filling the gaps between body particles.

Enhancing Translucency: Compared to potassium feldspar, sodium feldspar is better at improving the translucency of the product, giving the ceramic a more温润 (mellow/lustrous) and textured appearance.

Avoiding Discoloration: The whiteness of sodium feldspar is primarily affected by its internal impurity content. Low whiteness usually indicates a higher presence of coloring oxides (such as Iron Oxide Fe₂O₃ and Titanium Dioxide TiO₂). These impurities can cause the ceramic to turn yellow, gray, or develop spots during high-temperature firing, severely affecting the product’s appearance. Therefore, the industry’s demand for high whiteness is essentially a demand for low impurities, such as low iron and low titanium content.

3. Determines Market Positioning and Added Value

In the current ceramics market, price wars have hit rock bottom. To maintain profitability, companies must shift from “competing on price” to “competing on quality.”

High Whiteness = High Added Value: Companies that can stably supply high-whiteness sodium feldspar are more competitive in the supply chain. Ceramic products made with high-whiteness raw materials are positioned at a higher end, commanding higher market prices and profit margins.

The Necessity of Iron Removal Processes: To achieve high whiteness, ordinary sodium feldspar ore often requires deep processing techniques like wet electromagnetic separation and acid washing. This is driving the ceramic raw material industry to transform towards refined, high-quality production.

In summary, the whiteness of sodium feldspar is not only about the “aesthetics” of ceramic products but also a critical factor for ceramic enterprises to control firing quality, reduce defect rates, and elevate product grades and market competitiveness. For ceramic factories, procuring high-whiteness, low-impurity sodium feldspar is a prerequisite for producing premium ceramics.
